During the two and
a half year war known as the War of 1812, many women and men volunteered their
lives, to fight in what they believed in and protecting both the British and
American countries. Women definitely had
a huge role in these years. Women on the
battle grounds passed water to the soldiers, in camps they were laundresses, seamstresses, and
companions to the soldiers. Some were even stationed into the higher ranked officer’s
houses. They cooked meals and helped load canons. Many women took the jobs of
the men while they were stationed in the war. Women that didn’t go onto war
grounds still contributed. The women worked extra hours in the factories making
clothing to send to the soldiers, or baking pastries and breads to send. They
believed no women should ever fight on battle grounds; it was too rough for such
a delicate women. Now both men and women can fight for their country. Lots of people
thought women had no part in these harsh wars but they did. Laura Secord, she
travelled 19 Miles (32 Kilometres)
to warn of an
American invasion at the British outpost at the Beaver Dams. Mary Madden who walked the battlefield, bringing
coffee, food to the soldiers and tending the wounded was an act of selfless
bravery. The women on camp were the wives of the soldiers. If a woman's husband was killed or died she
had three to six months to get over their husbands death, and then they had a
choice to re-marry or leave the camp, majority of women choice to re-marry. Imagine if none of the women or men were too scared
to volunteer for this deadly war, how would the world be today? Canada and The
United States would still be under control of the Britain, we should take more
time to thank these amazing women and men who risked their lives for the better of ours.
